It’s Bill Nye the Science Guy! June 7, 2010

It’s Bill Nye the Science Guy!

I spent the weekend at the American Humanist Society conference in San Jose, CA (woo!)

The big annual award the AHA gives out is the Humanist of the Year — this year, the honoree was Bill Nye, the Science Guy.

Here’s my unofficial video of his talk (in three parts)! (If the AHA puts out a better version, I’ll replace the ones below.)

Gotta love the Episcopalian joke at the end of Part 1 🙂

And I found the man himself afterwards!

It. Was. Awesome.

    Oh, way cool!!

  • I am so glad he is so charming! At least one childhood “teacher” who doesn’t disappoint! I’ve watched a great show on the Discovery Channel, Journey to the Edge of the Universe, and boy does it ever make you feel insignificant! Awesome talk!

  • James

    Epic Win!!

  • I loved his show when I was a kid. He taught so much about science.

  • Tori Aletheia

I remember watching Bill every Friday in middle school science class…those were the days!

  • I grew up with Don Herbert aka Mr. Wizard in the 80’s. I did catch some of Bill Nye while in High School and being pictured with him is total win, Hemant.

  • MeagD

Omg! He’s hilarious and so charming! What a wonderful surprise 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • ThatOtherGuy

Ooooooohmigod, I have to watch this whole thing sometime, Bill Nye is my fucking hero~

  • JulietEcho

Wow, I’m jealous! Bill Nye is an amazing man, and I wish more attention had been brought to his PBS series for adults, The Eyes of Nye. I thought it was really well-done.

  • So Jealous!

  • BoomerChick

I don’t get the Episcopalian joke. Is anyone else confused?
    Where there’s a forth there’s a fifth?

  • BoomerChick

Never mind, I should have listened to part 2 before posting.

  • SpencerDub

    BoomerChick-

    “Wherever there’s four Episcopalians, there’s a fifth.”

As in, a fifth of a gallon, approximately 750 mL. It’s a common term in the States– at least, in my experience– used to describe a container of alcohol of that size.

And man, I just sucked the humor out of that one!

  • BoomerChick

    Thanks SpencerDub.

  • Rubbs

@BoomerChick: a fifth of a gallon. It used to be a size of a liquor bottle. Now it has been replaced by 750ml bottles.

Basically the joke was, where there are 4 Episcopalians, there is a bottle of liquor.

Opps. sorry didn’t see you already figured it out. 🙁 sorry.

  • BoomerChick

    Thanks Rubbs.

  • Dude! JEALOUS! I grew up watching him lol

  • Bill… Bill… Bill… Bill… Bill Nye the Science Guy!

And now you have the song in your head. 😉

  • Carlie

I read that Rick Warren was the guy who performed Bill’s wedding ceremony – so is he religious at all, or not?

  • Yes. It. Was.

  • Matt

    Omg sooooo cool

  • Lisa

    So very jealous…

  • Sarah

Rick Warren did perform is wedding ceremony which is strange.

    Anyways, I am terribly jealous.

  • LewisD

He was even in the latest Dr Who episode with Van Gogh!

  • Dan W

Bill Nye is made of awesome. I always loved watching episodes of Bill Nye the Science Guy. Still do. I’m jealous, I’d love to meet him!

    BoomerChick –

Right, not real funny, I wouldn’t have gotten it either if I didn’t hear the real version a few years back:

    Q) What do you get when you put 4 irishmen in a room?

    A) A fifth.

  • Sue

Thanks for the video. A little shaky :), but the audio came through quite clear for me.

  • Jonathan Figdor

    NERD ALERT!

    (Go Team Humanism!)

  • Max

BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL !!!!

  • Epistaxis

    Hemant, you have a very… distinctive… laugh.

  • BoomerChick

    Fundie Troll –
Yeah, a lot of jokes are based on stereotypes but why Episcopalians are drinkers/lushes/drunks is beyond me.
    Not the funniest joke.

  • @Epistaxis — You have a very… distinctive… chinstrap beard. Booya!

  • Jim

Hemant, any chance you might be getting a steady-cam for your birthday? 😉

  • @Jim — You want to buy me a tripod? 🙂 I’ll take it!

  • trog69

Thanks for this, Hemant. Alas, as a yute growing up in the late ’60s/early ’70s, all I got was cartoons or puppets. sheesh.

At least it got me outta the house.

Bill the Schill for Activion. He endorsed a “Woo” Product, so he’s lost all credibility in my eyes.
