    I’m a lawyer and I’m not sure why a law student wouldn’t be fine, depending on your purpose. For one, they have time. Two, they have free access to legal research databases. Three, since my practice has nothing to do with church and state, I probably knew more about constitutional issues as a student than I can remember now.

    As long as a law student understands basic law, why not have him write here?

    1) Establishment and Free Exercise jurisprudence is under debate all the time. A law student, IMO, as as much a part of the legal community as anybody else. As long as he isn’t dispensing legal advice, why shouldn’t he write in a public forum? Moreover, anybody who’s suffered through the socratic method knows that you learn the law through discussion with other legal professionals.

    2) I fail to see how a law student would offer opinions any less valid than the average sectarian or secular-oriented lawyer with an ideological axe to grind.

    3) The law on gov’t and religion is a tangled mess. The Lemon test is subjective as hell and inconsistently applied.
