Bye Bye, Brent

Brent Rasmussen is calling it quits for his longstanding atheist blog Unscrewing the Inscrutable. Among his other contributions, Brent created the Carnival of the Godless.

His blog was active for nine years! I have no stats to back this up, but I think most blogs die after nine posts.

Back then there were only a few “atheist blogs”. There was The Raving Atheist, Stupid Evil Bastard, World Wide Rant, and a few others. There were a lot of atheist web sites around, but blogging was just too new.

Over the years I changed UTI’s blogging software a half-dozen times, my web host more than a half-dozen times, and I watched the atheist blogging world explode. I saw Pharyngula appear on the scene in 2002. I created the Carnival Of The Godless in 2005, and watched the Atheist Blogroll being born shortly thereafter…

The great part about blogging is that ideas spread so easily to other interested people. Even though one blogger leaves, his ideas live on and manifest themselves in so many other ways. So I’m optimistic this isn’t the last we’ll hear of Brent.

There’s no doubt that pioneers like Brent create a lot of fertile ground for those that follow.

Hopefully Brent doesn’t feel like he’s one of those pioneers who end up with arrows in his back.

  • Thanks for the shout out, Hemant. I can say with certainty that this is not the last you’ll hear of me.

@Ron – No, I don’t feel that way. I am just moving past blogging. I am not sure exactly where I am moving to, but I’ll get there eventually. 😉
