Crispian Jago offers his version of Celebrity Quack Trumps. Below, we have anti-vaxer Jenny McCarthy and pro-cupper Gwyneth Paltrow:

  • Gwyneth should know better. Cupping works a lot better in the presence of turquoise crystals and a little bit of wolf’s hair.

    Jenny is dangerous, though, for the public health.

  • Ugh, I have horrible childhood memories of cupping. It was supposed to help with my diabetes. Even at the tender age of seven, I was convinced it was bullshit. Painful bullshit.

    Methinks Bill Maher should have received the honor, as well. He’s fucking brilliant on matters poligious, but not so much for nutrition/health.

    [BTW, these cards demand some rules for skeptifun at the next TAM, much like ‘Playing Gods’ allowed at last year’s Dragon*Con.]

    Not much of a “trump” there. 😉

  • I wonder how many pro-science celebrities there are besides the obvious. I know of Amanda Peet, but she’s always struck me as a less well known celebrity compared to these. A few have come out as atheists, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but that says nothing about their beliefs on woo-ey BS. Daniel Radcliffe says he admires Dawkins, but again, that’s not much to go on. I wish some of them would come out strongly on the side of science to counter the wackos.

    Peet is saying all the right stuff, though. She’s essentially said that people shouldn’t listen to her or other celebrities, but rather to scientists.

    what do you expect from someone who named her young girl ‘apple’? her and her thom yorke wannabe husband can believe whatever they want it really makes no difference, even though gwyneth is incredibly beautiful…

    Some of these cards are pretty good, but the ones against ayurvedic and even aroma candles are lame. The cards themselves mention some benefits from these procedures.

    I realize its a joke, but they create an equivalency between the dangerous stance of McCarthy and the silly stance of Aniston. *shrug*

    @Rene: Radcliffe said in no uncertain terms that he’s an atheist. And then he made a joke about how half the US probably wouldn’t see his next movie because he said that.

    Brits are much more likely to understand about the wackiness of woo than we are.

  • I have to disagree that vaccines are always safe and effective. I would NEVER give the Gardarsil shot to my daughter.

    The last time the government made the swine flu vaccine mandatory more people died from the shot than from the disease, hundreds of others were crippled. (You can roll up your sleeve this fall if you want but I surely won’t.)

    Vaccines aren’t all bad but they aren’t all good either. Do your own research before you get shots that may have adverse effects.

    its not the vaccine that causes the problem, its the preservatives. it has been proven that the mercury based preservatives in vaccines can cause Autism. the vaccine is harmless under normal circumstances, we just need to do something about the preservatives.
    as for cupping it sounds like bullshit and im sure it is

    You wouldn’t want to deny her the chance of getting cancer.

    If you’re talking about 1976 there was never any conclusive evidence that it was due to the vaccine. A bit like all the scaremongering bullshit supported by quacks today. That won’t stop you from making misleading statements like that though. Go on scaremonger, scare people with stories unsupported by evidence. My cat DIED just after he had BREATHED, breathing therefore causes death. See, anyone can do it.
