And This Is Why Newspapers Are Going Out of Business…

Thank you, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, for publishing this well thought-out letter-to-the-editor:

On the eve of King Kamehameha Day, I had a vision of the king. He told me to warn everyone about the coming mandatory vaccination programs. The swine flu and other inoculations are toxic.

We have been warned.

    Francis Pacheco, who is apparently a Kahuna, is welcome to abstain from inoculations for all sorts of diseases, as long as he doesn’t expect the rest of us to pay for his care when he gets sick.

    I disagree. I wouldn’t want a plague rat loose around my family and friends, and I wouldn’t want someone who denies needed protection to be spreading diseases around either.

  • Approaching? The guy is claiming a divine vision warned him about vaccines. I think that puts him on par with Jenny on the crazy front.

    Yeah, I thought about that for a moment, but we’re talking about diseases for which there are vaccines. If the rest of us have been inoculated, then we have nothing to worry about. He’s only going to infect other idiots. Another candidate for the Darwin award.

    Also a pity is the fact that I don’t even watch Dragonball, yet I still find the name associated with firing balls of energy at people…

    Sure he’s crazy. But there are actually legitimate stances against vaccinations that are given no attention at all. When I was an infant they made me terribly ill, I got what they were vaccinating me against. My parents thought I was going to die, and I had the same reaction to the next few vaccinations. There is little to no way for parents to get their children out of vaccinations even when they will do more harm than good. The funny part is that my parents had to forge a religious exemption in order to postpone my vaccinations. I got them all when I was older… but I won’t argue that ridiculous religious claims have some benefits, including not giving vaccinations to children who obviously can’t handle them.

    That is not why newspapers are going out of business.

    Sometimes editors print outrageous letter just to generate some buzz, it does not mean that they endorse the views presented.

    I don’t think that’s entirely fair. The problem with these antivaxers is that they are going to mess up the balance that allows a small number of people- people who have allergies to vaccines and babies too young to get their vaccines yet, as well as people underinsured or ignorant- to be protected due to herd immunity. In fact, a lack of herd immunity might not kill Francis, but it might kill Hawaiian babies, especially those in Hawaii’s many poor communities.

    I find it ironic that “pacheco” is slang in Mexico for “stoned”, as in marihuana stoned.
