Abstinence-Only Sex Education No Longer Federally Funded

President Barack Obama‘s getting criticized from the Left and the Right for his budget cutting.

But one cut was definitely good for science advocates: Obama eliminated abstinence-only funding for sex education.

The Secular Coalition for America had this to say (though this press release is not on their website at the time of this writing):

The Secular Coalition for America thanks President Obama for his decision to eliminate abstinence-only-until-marriage funding and replace it with funding for “scientifically accurate” teen pregnancy approaches. “Finally, sex education that is medically accurate and effective, instead of a hodge podge of medical misinformation and theological opinions — America’s children deserve no less,” said Ron Millar, the Secular Coalition’s Acting Director.

That’s the first thing I thought of when, during his inaugural address, he said he’d eliminate programs that don’t work.

Finally! this is one topic that hits very close to home, and it’s such a relief to see that someone in power actually understands that abstinence only education can RUIN LIVES. Thanks, Mr. President. You’ve been doing splendidly so far.

  • This move is promising. Next stop: Creationism/ID/Teach The Controversy.

  • It’s about darn time.

  • That’s fantastic! I sincerely hope we go back to putting condoms on nanners.

I work with these kids and so often hear the same, lame myths I grew up with (ie-can’t get pregnant your first time) and they’re having all sorts of sexual dilemmas (ie-still a virgin because I only have unprotected anal sex) because of this abstinence only craziness being pushed at them.
I’m so glad to hear that this is no longer being funded and truly hope that we will begin approaching our teens and pre-teens with the same maturity and sensibility that they should expect from their educators.

It boggles my mind that I received more accurate and comprehensive sex education over 20 years ago than many students are getting today. I am curious, however, about what the Catholic schools here in Ontario might be teaching (or more to the point, not teaching).
Many thanks to every teacher (and parent) who deals honestly and informatively about this challenging subject. I dread having “the talk” (plus all the subsequent talks) with my daughters but I will make sure that they have the facts they need to make informed choices.
