Dan Brown’s New Book Now Available on Amazon

Dan Brown‘s new book, The Lost Symbol, is now available for pre-order on Amazon!

It’ll be released in September.

That gives us all five months to hear religious groups rekindle their contempt for Brown’s bestseller, The Da Vinci Code.

I don’t even think this new book deals with God, but I’m sure religious groups will find a way to complain about it…

  • If the hints given when The DaVinci Code came out were acurate, this book should have a Masonic twist to it.

  • Woot, I’m excited. I know people like to harp on Dan Brown, but I still like his books, so whatever.

  • I’m sure I’ll be able to find a way to complain about it. The difference is I don’t think Dan Brown is that good a writer.

    I am not saying his books are good, but I can’t actually put them down when I read them. Now, granted, I have a difficult time putting books down in general (my attention span is short, and I might not pick them up again) but still…

    I’m with Noadi. I think he has interesting ideas, but his prose almost unreadable. Nonetheless, I’m sure this book will sell in the gajillions and drive all my friends working at Barnes & Noble up the wall, most of whom agree with me regarding his writing skills.

  • Eh, I’m usually hypercritical of bad writing (as you may know from my infamous “gobbler of whangs” book review…oh god), but I really don’t mind Dan Brown that much. I mean, he’s not superb, but I don’t think he’s bad. I’d say he’s decent. What he lacks in writing he makes up with a compelling story that makes you keep turning the pages.

  • He does have a way of making you turn the pages, but his prose is outright horrible. It took me three tries to get through the first two chapters of Angels and Demons. The DaVinci Code was a little bit better, but not much. I haven’t read his last, and I won’t be reading his next.

  • Maybe I’m just biased because I read the books when I was still in high school… Now I’m sort of afraid that since my reading tastes have matured, I’m going to find this one awful =\

    Dan Brown was put on earth so that J. K. Rowling would look like a talented writer. (Don’t get me wrong, she’s a good plotter, just a terrible writer.)

    Similarly, LaHaye and Jenkins were put on earth so that Brown would look like the next Faulkner.

    So right. To anyone who doubts the shittiness of Brown’s prose should check out the Language Log series of posts about his just horrendous use of the English language. What an insult to literature.

  • I’ve recently got round to reading The Da Vinci Code. There are some wonderful ideas presented but it wasn’t a great read. If I wrote have as well I’d criticise more. I honestly couldn’t see why a Christian would object to it though. It was clearly fiction (about a fiction) rather than an historical analysis. It really seems like some people just can’t separate reality from fantasy at all.

  • I only have two real complaints about the DaVinci Code.

    First: any serious art historian would not refer to him as ‘Da Vinci’ any more than they’d refer to ‘van Rijn’ or ‘van Delft’

    His name was Leonardo and that is how he’s referred to in art history texts. Like Carravaggio and Raphael.

    To do otherwise shows the ignorance of the speaker.

    Secondly: Man, it’s not a well-written book.

    Jesus effing spank, people! Can’t you just enjoy something without pick pick picking it down to rubble? What’s wrong with you?

    Dan Brown is the Michael Bay of fiction – substanceless, trashy, enjoyable action-thrillers.

    Don’t complain that the movie’s bad when you already knew that before going in. Similarly, Lost Symbol is going to be enjoyable pulp garbage. Manage your expectations. Enjoy it for what it is, and don’t condemn it for not being something it doesn’t want to be and could never be.

    Anything that gives Christianity a “wedgie” is all right with me. Brown’s play with history did just that. The plus is that he got people thinking and researching, with many realizing that the history of Christianity is built upon fiction also.

    I can forgive Brown his “wedgie” to literature.

    I loved The Da Vinci Code. Sure, there were factual errors, but the writing was very good and the story was great as well, even if he forgot to read a simple history book on Constantine.

    I didn’t think The Da Vinci Code was the greatest thing ever but I still enjoyed it a lot. There’s one thing I don’t get about it is Dan Brown’s logic. I don’t believe in God, but I don’t see how proving Jesus had sex somehow proves he wasn’t divine. As far as I’m aware, there’s no rule that says divine beings can’t have sex. I just think that you can make a stronger argument against the trinity just from reading the bible itself without having to go on a silly quest for the Holy Grail. And why do all the characters act like it’s some huge revelation that the bible is not historically accurate? Pretty much everyone expect conversative Christians accept that it isn’t yet they act like this is some Earth shattering revelation. You only have to actually read the bible to know it’s not historically accurate. And I love how Catholics complain about the Da Vinci Code being historically inaccurate yet they don’t apply the same logic to the bible. Brown also works under the presumption Jesus actually existed as a historical figure but ignores that there’s no non-biblical evidence Jesus was real and not a mythological character.

  • The odds are far greater that Jesus, if he actually existed, was gay. I’d like to see Dan Brown write an action thriller book about that. Writing style aside, I’d be chuckling at every paragraph just thinking about everyone’s reaction to the storyline.

    I respect most of you here who have terribly different beliefs with me. I am a devoted Christian. I also definitely wouldn’t want to hear our God being horribly mocked. How come its so easy for you to say those blasphemies against Christ? Well, you are indeed atheists, this should not probably surprise me. But you seem to be just throwing out your mouths without like thinking twice. I don’t know. We have an awfully different culture. That may be taken into account. But still it’s entirely not a good excuse. So please minimize your excessive profanities and irreverence.
