I don’t agree it’s a rape joke, but I’d at least like to give props to cathy for not making a federal case out of it, i.e. “sexism! patriarchy! you people should be ashamed!” – which happens far too often.

It’s an exposure joke, but not a good one.

That is so not the way you should react to a flasher. Any woman who has had some self defense training knows that you should either not react at all, or laugh in the flashers face. The reaction portrayed here is just what he is after.

Vystrix: no, not at all. I’ve been in threads where one poster is absolutely determined to find sexism in a posted item – if I recall correctly, someone in this blog leaped on a writer’s use of the term “girl next door” – its proper context was simply a gender-specific synonym for “average joe”, but the poster took an awfully long time to insist that the use of “girl next door” was an act of blatant sexism on the writer’s part.

I’m not a big fan of the “lie back and enjoy it” school myself. But I’m also not a big fan of politically correct wowsers. Sometimes the best thing to do if you disagree with a position is to say you just disagree with it.

People are way too uptight and politically correct now-a-days. I saw the picture yesterday, had a really good laugh, and quickly saved and forwarded it to my boyfriend (who absolutely hates bananas).

I find it odd that PC bashing has become so social expected that it’s practically the politically correct response to someone expressing discomfort with a joke.

And yeah I can see how the joke could be triggering to someone who’s had a run in with a flasher or another similar experience. However I think the main intent of the joke is just a play on banana’s being similar to certain male organs. Does that mean it’s ok? I’m not sure. Probably not.

I’m an atheist. A female. And I KNEW bananas were up to no good. Pure ‘nanner evil.

That said, I find the cartoon quite funny in a sick and twisted way. It’s anthropomorphic fruit, people!

Not funny.

This picture normalizes sexual assault, and those traumatized my nonconsensual exposure to others’ genitalia. It takes a serious, scarring event and makes it “No, guys, it’s just a joke! You don’t have a sense of humor!”

I’ve got a healthy sense of humor. I just don’t find a 1-out-of-6 statistic funny.

Sexual assault, rape, flashers: they are never joke material. You think it’s funny? Go read some rape survivors’ stories and get some perspective.
