What Do You Do on the Speech Team?

As I’ve mentioned before, I help coach a Speech Team at my high school. I was also on the team at the school I attended and it was probably the most influential part of my life at that time.

A lot of people have no idea what that involves… do we just give speeches all day? No, not exactly.

So you can imagine the pleasant surprise I got when I saw a front-page story about Speech in the Chicago Tribune yesterday.

The team profiled is one I’ve competed against for years — they’re always strong and definitely worthy of the attention. Reporter John Keilman followed the team over the past month as they made their way through the Regional, Sectional, and State tournament.

It’s a great article and you get a glimpse of what Speech is like 🙂 The video and pictures are worth checking out, too.

  • I think you are more interested in the babies on the right!
…and now we know the rest of the story.

I am on the public forum debate team. Its always fun messing with the speechies. I wish your team good luck.
Also, what league are you in? NFL? CFL? both? Neither?
I am interested if it is run different in other parts of the country.

My current school does neither, though when I was in high school, we were slowly getting more involved with NFL.

I did public forum debate at well as the speech events. It was probably the most positive experience I had in high school aside from theater (now my major!). Good luck with your team! Oh, and you should definitely join NFL!

  • I noticed this post doesn’t have nearly the comments as the posts devoted to atheism. 🙂

It’s nice to see such an inspirational, non-sports-related story of high school students on the front page of a major paper.

Although I wonder if the team would have been covered if Obama hadn’t been in the spotlight for the past couple of years, I think it’s great that readers are shown positive images of young black men.
