Who Are Your Famous Friends? February 2, 2009

Who Are Your Famous Friends?

I’m stealing this idea from Mental Floss. Why? Because it’s awesome and because a lot of commenters on this site have come to know each other so this may be entertaining to do. And because it’s always fun to stalk people.

Send in your favorite pictures of yourself with a celebrity! — author, TV/movie star, politicians, etc. (Mild levels of celebrity are ok, too.) I’ll post my favorites next week 🙂

Send the pics to email.JPG!

In the meantime, you can check out a list of famous people this site’s readers already know at this thread.

  • Cause I’m lazy:

    Me and Mr D.

    Me and Mr H.

Oh, and of course Me and Mr M!

  • One of my best friends passed away a few years ago – I still miss him.
I have included a video from The Illinois Institute of Technolgy honoring him. He is featured at about the two minute mark.
Anyway, he was world renowned in his field of Psychometrics. He was frequently an advisor to The Pentagon, but most remebered for his kindness and generosity.

I hope you don’t mind the link above

  • I forgot, his name was Nambury Raju, and a google search will show how well known he was, as well as a video honoring him.

  • sam

I have a pic of me and the wrestler Mick Foley around my house somewhere.

  • I have pictures of me with Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, and Chester Whitmore.

They are all famous dancers. Frankie and Norma are from the Swing era. Frankie created the “air step” in Swing. They both came out of Harlem – The Savoy Ballroom.

Oh, yes, I am a Lindy Hopper! And, yes, I do air steps. 🙂

I wonder if any famous people read this blog and would admit to it?

  • Ubi Dubium

Here is UbiDubiKid#1 and UbiDubiKid#2 with PZ Myers.

  • Siamang

HA! I have PZ’s same shirt.

    His is bigger tho.

  • Heh. I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I used to have a picture of me with the Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline, since the youth pastor that attended our high school bible study groups was the editor-in-chief of Campus Life, the magazine from Christianity Today geared towards high-schoolers, and arranged for me to go to an interview with him.

I googled for the picture (you used to be able to find it), but now all you get is the text of the article in an archive 🙁

Sucks because I kinda had freaky hair in that picture.

  • «bønez_brigade»

I had a pic taken with Katie Couric in Sydney back in 2000, but I can’t find the damned thing now (only the mini “proof” pic). I have a few pics with famous skeptics/defendersofscience&reason, including Hemant, James Randi, Phil Plait, Barbara Forrest (whilst wearing relevant ‘Teach The Controversy’ garb with the latter two). However, I’ll submit my pic with Neil deGrasse Tyson, as he was signing a poster for me on my back.

  • Bruce

Actually, pics don’t mean much because people are always asking celebrities to take a picture with them but that doesn’t mean they really know them or are friends.

On a side note, my parents live very close to Bruce Campbell and I have actually had several conversations with him over the years. They are on a first name basis but I doubt he would recognize my name except for the fact that we share the same first name.

  • Bruce, I think he means ‘friends’ in the funny haha, I asked a celeb to take a picture with me definition of ‘friend’. I’m fairly certain he doesn’t expect any of us to be bffs with Stephen Hawking, although it would be a pleasant surprise, as I’m sure he makes a mean cup of joe.

  • Bruce – The instruction says “Send in your favorite pictures of yourself with a celebrity”. So that’s what we’re doing. 🙂

Although, I actually met Mr D. twice, and he remembered me the second time, so I wouldn’t say it’s entirely impossible that he might still remember me should I meet him a third!

I always struggle to define “celebrity” in these things. I have a picture of myself with film score composer Howard Shore (alas, it’s packed and I’m not going to root through all those boxes to find it, so you are all just going to have to wait), and have met several world-class double-reed musicians. I’m on a first-name, stop-and-chat-at-cons basis with RPG designer Monte Cook, a few other designers and some fantasy novelists. I have plenty of pictures of/with people like Hitchens, Myers, (Dawkins coming soon), etc. But all of the above, excepting Mr. Shore, are because of various professional endeavors – so I feel like none of them “count.”

I don’t have a picture, but I’ve spoken with Bob Kerrey (former Nebraska senator and governor) a few times. He’s the president of my university (The New School in New York City), so I seem him on the street pretty often and he sometimes waves or smiles at me. (I guess he doesn’t know that I was one of the many students protesting against him in December…)

  • Kristie

Ha! I was going to actually post my picture with Bruce Campbell, but I can’t find it to scan.

I also have one with Steven J Cannell (writer & producer of many things, including the A-team).

I have many friends who recently got caught in pictures with Ex-pres W Bush at a recently Baylor Lady Bears game. Bush even actosted my friend’s granddaughter when she was trying to get Kim Mulkey’s autograph. Bush leaned in so close to talk to here, they touched forheads. She’s the 5th picture here: http://www.wacotrib.com/photos/mediahub/01282009_bush/slideshow/index.jsp?tId=143478

And last, my favorite-est is a pic of my grandpa with Elvis. But I actually have that in my lock box and won’t go get it just for this.

  • Awesomesauce

While in choir at my high school, we performed with Judy Collins. I have a picture of it somewhere if I can be arsed to find a scanner.

We also (like thousands of people in IL) got to meet and converse with Obama as he was campaigning for his Senate seat. It was an actual conversation too as there were only about thirty people in the audience.

Funny how nobody bothered to take pictures.

Oh, this one’s a stretch, but my late grandmother’s nephew was the mastermind behind the pedigree dog food commercial during this latest Superbowl. You know, the one with the rhinoceros?

I don’t do the whole celebrity stalking thing, but I could probably dig out my high school yearbook and find a picture of myself with Mike Sellers. We were both on the basketball team. He was always kind of a jerk to me, though.

I grew up in the state capitol, and a lot of my friends went into politics, so I’ve met and socialized with a lot of people involved in state and federal government, including both our current state senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. But I don’t think I have any pictures with any of them.
