Raising a Little Skeptic

Pastor Mike here…

So we get out of church this morning where my three-year-old has heard the Annunciation story in Children’s Church (i.e. the story of the angel visiting Mary and telling her she’s pregnant with the Messiah), and after telling us all about it, she goes on to say that “It’s just a story. It didn’t really happen.”

Now I’m wondering how I managed to raise such a little skeptic. 🙂

  • Most children are that perceptive…until we ruin them.

  • Must be the good company you keep rubbing off on you 🙂

  • Ah the brutal honesty of children 🙂

  • Great Job! We need more skeptics!

Maybe children are born Atheists. 🙂

I think she’ll grow up to be an intelligent young lady.

When my father first told me the tale of Noah’s ark – and I was holding a toy ark in my hand – my first reaction was, “this is just a story for kids.” I don’t know how old I was.
He told me that it really did happen. I don’t remember if I was convinced right then and there, but I sure became convinced later. Then, happily, deconvinced much later.

Good for her. I hope she always carries that self-assured skepticism and it doesn’t get squashed by the forces of conformity that will inevitably surround her in this world.
