All Sorts of Atheist-y Things Going on Tomorrow Night

You have your pick from several incredible options.

I trust you know which option is best…

I’ll be speaking at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) for the Campus Atheists and Secular Humanists (CASH) at 7:00 p.m. The event is free of charge.

(If you can come to the CASH event, feel free to sign up on the Facebook page.)

Christopher Hitchens and (brother) Peter Hitchens will be conducting their first public debate (on a variety of topics) at 7:30 p.m. at Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tickets are $15.

The event will be webcast live at these two websites.

They even get a (very entertaining) promo video:

Finally, Daniel Dennett is giving two talks, tomorrow and Friday night, at Minnesota State University (Mankato) at 7:30 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom. Thursday’s talk will be “Religion as a Natural Phenomenon” and Friday’s will be “Evolution and Evitability: Free Will and Responsibility.” Both events are free of charge.

What Are Your Thoughts?leave a comment
  • Did anyone else notice that Peter Hitchens was described by his political views and his religious views (Conservative Anglican), whilst Christopher for some *strange* reason was described as a smoker and a drinker as well?

    Naturally I assume this was an attempt to portray Liberal atheists as bad people by linking them with smoking and alcohol. How exactly does smoking and drinking come into this debate in any way otherwise…

    Sure, I know which event to go to, if I could get there: The free CASH event, of course! I would never pass up an opportunity for free cash!

  • LOL a “liberal, drinking and smoking athiest”. what the fuck does that have to do with his beliefs? why didnt they just throw in “he cusses too.. and he smells funny.” just a thought though: are there “conservative” athiests?

  • Zach;
    Yes, Virginia, there are conservative atheists.

    I don’t think there is, or should be, a litmus test (conservative or liberal) to determine one’s qualifications to be an atheist. There is only one criterion: a negative answer to the question “do you believe in God?”.

  • Kathryn

    I’m wondering which one is “worse” though, a conservative or a liberal atheist?

  • Kathryn;
    Which is worse? What does that mean? Shouldn’t we be pulling for all atheists, regardless of their political leanings? Personally, I would love it if conservatives AND liberal politicians dropped the God-talk from their yammerings.

    I wasn’t aware that there was such a thing as an “undesirable” atheist. I don’t think we have the demographics to start playing that game.

    Woooot!!! Daniel Dennet!! (Sorry Hemant)

    And our group (Campus Atheists and Agnostics) didn’t even have to invite him. It’s going to be a great event.

  • Campus Atheists and Agnostics rule! You should go to Mankato just to see them on Tuesday nights!

  • Karen

    Hee, hee … the two Hitchens remind me of the old “Goofus and Gallant” twins from the Highlights children’s magazine. They look a lot alike, but one is clean-cut and churchgoing and the other is scruffy, angry and vice-ridden.

    Guess which one’s the atheist!? 😉

  • Jen

    I honestly had no idea there were TWO Hitchens. Hmmm… the video sounded like it had to make fun of Chris and his vices, because at least we have heard of him.
