This is what you miss out on when you don’t join the Friendly Atheist Forums:
That’s courtesy of SusanB, who I hope makes that into a t-shirt 🙂
If you haven’t joined the forums, jump right in!
(via the aptly named Atheism and Coffee)
Seattle has the most of both =)
Wow, I’m famous! 🙂
Why does atheism keep you up at night?
I don’t know that atheism keeps me up most nights*, but it sure seems to be keeping up some of us tonight!
*And I hate coffee. I may have to retire at atheism.
No, that was because of the election returns. 🙂
Well duh, Mike. Look at the time next to your comment.
No, that was because of the election returns.
Excuses. It’s to keep talking to fascinating insomniacs like me, and you know it.
Gotta get to bed before I hurt my face on the keyboard. I will dream of coffee….coffee….
Wow, I’m famous!
Susan B, I’m becoming a big fan of yours.
Coffee giving out. Must rest. Must r
How does atheism keep people up at night or get people up in the morning? I don’t understand.
Funny thing is, coffee helps me sleep, if not put me to sleep sometimes. I haven’t found disbelief in anything keep me awake at night either.
Yes, how does atheism keep people awake at night? 😕 I haven’t had the problem. Of course last night was due to the election. 🙂
Here’s my answer:
Knowing that we are alone, that the universe doesn’t care about us, that we are utterly insignificant, isn’t particularly pleasant. It’s true, but it can be scary.
Knowing, though, that this life is the one chance we get, that we’ll ever get, is enough to convince me to make it the best one I can, for me and for those I care about.
If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. ‘Cause that’s all there is.
I looked at this last night when there were no comments, but I was to tired to write, and look how many there are now!
Anyway I thought the benefit of atheism was cookies. Or pie. You know “become an atheist- we have cookies!”
I don’t drink caffeine, so I’d have to change “coffee” to “my two year old”.
What, 2:40am? That’s not late. That’s my usual bedtime. 🙂
Do you have ADD Mriana? I’ve heard that caffeine sometimes has this kind of reverse effect on people with ADD.
Not to be a critic or anything, but a message that prompts questions about its meaning needs to be refined. This one is not general enough. There’s my two cents.
I don’t understand, Darryl. What do you mean? Are you saying you are a critic or are you saying you are not a critic? What is wrong with a message that prompts questions about its meaning? Could it be a conversation starter? What do you mean it’s not general enough? Wouldn’t being more general make it less specific and even harder to understand its meaning? What would the message be like if it was more refined? Could you give an example? Where’s your two cents? What do you mean by that?
The slogan strikes me more as something Fred Phelps might say! 🙂
As we atheists/heretics/infidels/heathenists keep him ‘up at night’ out of frustration, and we also give him his chief ‘purpose’ every day!
Hmmm…I meant the meaning to be a bit ambiguous, but I guess it was too much so! Atheism keeps me up at night for a number of reasons–one because I’m always on forums and blogs like this instead of sleeping! Also, the problems that atheists face in many parts of the world do worry me enough that I spend a lot of time thinking about them, although I’m not sure if I’ve ever literally lost sleep over them. Lastly, I often stay up late or lie awake in bed thinking about questions of logic, philosophy, ethics, etc. simply because I find them interesting (just as I lie awake thinking about math problems and so on). So for the most part, atheism keeps me awake at night in a positive way.
I find it amusing (though not surprising) that all the questions I’ve gotten from atheists on this have been “Why does atheism keep you up at night?” while all the questions from theists have been “How does atheism help you get up in the morning?” The atheists have no trouble with the second part, and the theists have no trouble with the first part (although they’re probably guessing the wrong reasons why).
