Those Outside the Church Talk About This Inside the Church

The Student Action Diversity Committee at the Christian Rochester College is inviting its students to listen in on a conversation between atheists, a Wiccan, a Gnostic, and a Spiritualist on issues relating to Christianity and the church.

The event is called “LOST: A Candid Conversation with Those Outside the Church about Those Inside the Church.” (I’m not a fan of the title… no one is “lost” here.) But I am a fan of the idea. No one should be afraid of hearing an alternative viewpoint or five… and the fact that Christian students are taking the lead in inviting several non-Christians to talk about faith on their home turf says a lot about the community there.

Just look at this excerpt from their press release:

This is NOT a debate. While passionate debate has it’s place, we are choosing to view this event as a rare chance to better understand people who don’t necessarily think and believe like we do and see just how we are perceived by those outside the Church–the good, the bad, and the…well, you know.

The event will take place on Monday, November 12th from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rochester College Auditorium (PDF) in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

  • Thanks for the shout out, Hemant. And, for the record, we picked the name “LOST” tongue planted firmly in cheek. We’re going to be asking our panelists that night how they feel about being labeled in such a way. Pax, bro. Hope to generate some good dialogue.

  • Ah, but I see more “Lost” people in Christianity…

We are truly LOST when we have decided that there’s no need to keep searching (even in the things and people that we deem unworthy of our attention.)

The more we learn, the more we find out just how little we know…

This looks like a great event. Kudos to the students who are organizing and hosting it. I wish I could attend.

I don’t know. I tend to get suspecious as to why the group wants these talks, esp when they use words such as “Lost” and alike.

  • Hey guys, we’ll have audio up on our website ( a few days afterwards so you can hear what we talk about. And “lost,” for the purposes of our event, is a very tongue-in-cheek title. We’ll be addressing it that night and the possibilities of new metaphors for a new generations of people.

  • Hey our podcast is live at . I think Patrick Julius of the U of M Chapter of the SSA did an excellent job representing the atheist perspective.
