Random Musings… March 6, 2007

Random Musings…

Outside my door this afternoon was a box.

I wasn’t expecting any packages, but I read the “from” address… it was from WaterBrook Press. And I got all excited. Grabbed some scissors. Opened it up.

It was a box of books.

24 copies of I Sold My Soul on eBay.

I hadn’t seen the manuscript since December. When I had it in my hands then, it was just pages printed off a computer. There were still some typos that needed to be fixed. Copy editors were still looking it over. If I needed to reference anything I had written, I’d go straight back to the original Word documents on my computer.

Then it was sent off, out of my hands for good. Outside a couple emails with the publishers detailing minor changes that were made, I didn’t hear too much about the writing itself. My part in that whole process was over. I had been working on the book since last summer, so it was a relief to be done.

Then today, this box arrives, and I see the books.

And I realize this sounds strange. But they were real. I was actually holding a copy of the book in my hand…

I’ve had random thoughts in the past about how cool it would be to write a book. Those dreams were usually wedged in between thoughts of adopting Stewie from Family Guy, winning Survivor, understanding the proof to Fermat’s Last Theorem, and other things that sound like fun but will never actually happen in my life.

So I’m excited. I’m proud of how it came out. I hope others will enjoy it. Though, I’ll admit I’m kind of afraid of opening the book because I have this irrational fear of seeing a mistake. Oh well. I’ll get over that soon enough.

It’s still over a month before the book will be released, and at that point, I’m sure I’ll face some heat from people who disagree with what I’m saying and there will be some serious discussions to be had.

But until then, I’ll take in the surrealness of it all.
