Fans Revolt After Christian Singer Uses Bible Verse to Condemn Border Separation

Mike Donehey, the lead singer of the Christian band Tenth Avenue North, recently posted on Instagram a Bible verse condemning the cruel immigration policies of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Isaiah 10:1-2 reads: “Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.”

If you’re looking for a Bible verse against what Trump is doing, it’s hard to find one that’s more appropriate.

Yet many Christians were quick to condemn him. Days after that image went up, Donehey posted a follow-up explaining what happened as a result:

I had quite a bit of feedback on the verse from Isaiah I posted. Some people decided to unfollow me. Some accused me of being a liberal. Some told me to keep my nose out of politics. Let me be clear. I am an American. As such, I believe in borders this side of the kingdom come. I believe in laws and their enforcement. But just as Jesus disagreed with many laws that He believed to be unjust, I believe it is my honor to speak up against any practice or policy, legal or otherwise, that might rob anyone, regardless of nationality, of their inherit dignity as a human being made in the image of God. That said, I AM NOT, advocating for the total eradication of borders. I am, however, advocating children NEVER, under any circumstance, be kept in cages. This is the conversation. And to quote former First Lady Laura Bush: “I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.” May we always love justice more than our platforms.

His fans, presumably Christians, unfollowed him or called him names because he said children shouldn’t be ripped apart from their parents or kept in cages.

That’s the state of evangelicalism in the age of Trump.

Donehey posted one more follow-up, thanking Trump for his executive order… but that may be more to appease his fans than anything else since experts have said Trump’s executive order won’t reunite families that have already been ripped apart and it may lead to whole families being detained indefinitely.

It’s just another form of cruelty. Yet Donehey, for some reason, thinks that’s a step in the right direction.
