Bill Donohue Slams “Young Male Agnostic Dems” Who Say Porn Is Morally Acceptable

Gallup released a poll yesterday showing that acceptance of pornography was at an all-time high. 43% of Americans now believe it’s “morally acceptable,” and the jump from last year (36%) to this year is the greatest rise (heh) Gallup has ever seen.

As you’d expect, Gallup also broke down the numbers by demographic. More Democrats (53%) accept pornography than Republicans (27%). More single people (50%) than married ones (35%). More males under 50 (67%) than women 50 or older (23%). And more non-religious people (76%) than very religious ones (22%).

None of that is surprising. If I gave you a blank chart with the demographic groups and told you to put them in order from most to least accepting of adult content, you could do it with very little trouble.

Now check out the reaction from The Catholic League’s Bill Donohue who thinks these results are a “problem” and quickly jumps to making assumptions and connections that have nothing to do with what Gallup found.

Young single Democrat males with no religion are the problem. As previous studies have shown, this is the same population that champions a woman’s right to abortion. Why should we be surprised to learn that morally vacuous young males are the most likely to be sexually reckless? They always have been. The difference now is there are so many more of them, the ultimate losers being women.

He never explains what the “problem” is. How Donohue gets from liking pornography to being “sexually reckless,” I don’t know. He’s not a fan of providing citations. And if the losers in all this are women, someone should tell the 32% who have no moral dilemma with porn.

In a rant that never once mentions President Pee Tape, Stormy Daniels, or the Catholic Church’s sex scandals, Donohue is quick to name Hollywood stars and prominent liberals who have been subjects of the #MeToo movement (Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Anthony Weiner, Eric Schneiderman).

(What do any of them have to do with moral acceptance of pornography? Nothing. Not a single damn thing.)

Donohue also tosses in Michelle Wolf and Samantha Bee… because using harsh language to tell deeper truths somehow makes them “morally challenged.”

There’s a very real debate to be had about the ethics of pornography. Is it made with consent on all sides? Are the acts safe for the performers? At what point do viewers become addicted to it? Are the typical situations seen in pornography warping how young people think about sex? Does it send the wrong message about what good sex looks, sounds, and feels like? Donohue doesn’t talk about any of that nuance. In his mind — and the minds of other religious conservatives — the mere thought of sex outside of marriage is straight-up blasphemous.

There’s nothing wrong with people who choose to have consensual sex on camera (or any other way, for that matter). More Americans are starting to figure that out. That’s a good thing. We should be far more worried about people who suppress their desires than those who freely watch others acting out their fantasies.
