Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) Will Speak at Atheist Group’s Lobby Day Event

The Secular Coalition for America’s annual Lobby Day and Secular Summit will take place June 12-14, and I just received word that Rhode Island’s Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has confirmed that he will be the keynote speaker:

The Secular Coalition is excited to announce the keynote speaker for our upcoming Lobby Day and Secular Summit, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). Sen. Whitehouse has served as the co-chair and co-founder of both the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change and the bipartisan Senate Oceans Caucus and considered climate change one of his top issues. Each week, Senator Whitehouse gives a “Time to Wake Up” speech in the Senate, compelling his colleagues to move forward on climate change. View some of the charts he has used to illustrate important information in his speeches here.

Whitehouse is an Episcopalian who received a “B” on the SCA’s 2013 Senate Scorecard (he got docked for not sponsoring a particular comprehensive sex education bill). More information about Whitehouse will be up on the SCA’s site tomorrow.

Last year, both Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) spoke at the event. I’m glad to see SCA still attracting top-level politicians.

If you’d still like to be a part of the event, it’s not too late to sign up. Registration closes on June 1. As someone who’s done it before, I can tell you it’s educational and worthwhile. Take advantage of this if you can!
